Things to do in the local area

There is more than enough to do for young and old in the immediate vicinity of our campsite, but also in the wider surrounding area. Whether you are a nature lover, sporty type or bargain hunter, with such a wide variety of activities and attractions to enjoy in the area, you will struggle to fit them all in. Here are some examples of what is on offer:

Oostvaardersplassen

Campsite ‘t Oppertje is right next to Oostvaardersplassen, a well-known part of National Park Nieuw Land, famous from the amazing Dutch nature documentary ‘De Nieuwe Wildernis’, which has also gained international acclaim. There are marked routes you can follow, but armed with a map, you can also easily put together your own route. Don’t forget your binoculars and see how many birds, deer, Konik horses and small game you can spot at the various observation points.

National Park Nieuw Land

Strange as it sounds, Oostvaardersplassen, Lepelaarplassen, Markermeer and Marker Wadden would never have existed if it hadn’t been for the reclamation of Flevoland. And although originally instigated by humans, it is Mother Nature who has created the stunning, at times even un-Dutch, landscapes that now constitute National Park Nieuw Land. There is so much to see and do in this world-class nature reserve. And because Nieuw Land is still developing, there will be something new to discover every time you visit. Can’t wait to have a look around Nieuw Land? Watch this stunning clip.

Water sports lake Het Bovenwater

Water sports lake Het Bovenwater is situated right by our campsite. This 125ha lake is perfect for both beginners and more experienced water sports enthusiasts. Surfboards, canoes and pedalos can be hired from Tom’s Creek.

Sandy beach

There is a small sandy beach within walking distance of the campsite. Here you have the possibility to be active on the water. Swimming is at your own risk.

Fishing park andcafeteria Toms Creek Fishing Adventure

Situated next to care farm De Huif is fishing park Toms Creek Fishing Adventure with no fewer than 15 different well-laid-out fishing lakes. Fishing rods can be hired at low prices on site and you can fish for trout, carp, sturgeon and European catfish. Any fish you catch can be cleaned at the park in the fish cleaning area or exchanged for (freshly) smoked trout. Not that keen on fishing? Toms Creek also has a charming lodge and terrace with panoramic views, where everyone is welcome to enjoy a snack and/or drink.

Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet

Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet was the first designer outlet shopping centre to open its doors in the Netherlands in 2001. Following expansion in 2017, the shopping centre is now home to 150 stores of international fashion brands. Shoppers enjoy 30% to 70% discounts here all year round on brands including Scotch & Soda, Hugo Boss, Fred de la Bretoniere, Armani, Le Creuset, Adidas and Nike.

Batavialand

Batavialand is situated by Markermeer, next to Batavia Stad and consists of an indoor and outdoor attraction. Visitors can have a look around the replica of the Dutch East India Company ship Batavia, moored at the landing stage of the shipyard. The museum, too, is well worth a visit, with amazing maritime exhibitions, presentations and fun kids’ activities. Batavialand is a great, educational, interactive day out for the whole family.

Natuurpark Lelystad

A spacious recreation area which was created in the seventies and is home to otters, beavers, wisents, wild boars, red deer and Przewalski’s horses. Because of their large habitats, it may take some effort to spot these animals. Luckily, this beautifully maintained nature park also provides kilometre-long cycling and walking trails, a playground for the kids and a cosy restaurant overlooking the lake, so there is more than enough here to keep you entertained!

Marker Wadden

Marker Wadden is the youngest piece of land (and water) of the Netherlands. It consists of a group of man-made nature-reserve islands that are home to a variety of plants, insects, fish and birds. The islands are part of National Park Nieuw Land and are still being developed, but the main island is now open to the public. You can go walking, birdwatching or enjoy the beach in this natural haven. The harbour is accessible by your own boat or via various ferry services, like MS Waddenzee (www.mswaddenzee.com) or Zeilschip Bounty (www.zeilschipbounty.nl).

Aviation theme park Aviodrome

Aviodromethe amusement park for a day packed with aircrafts and aviation activities is within cycling distance of ‘t Oppertje. Here, you can see a Boeing 747 jumbo jet up close and even get on board, learn Morse code in the radio room, have a go at ‘flying’ in a simulator, and discover all about Dutch aviation through a unique collection of over 100 aircrafts. Kids can go wild on the various playground attractions and have actual pilot and flight attendant training

Walibi Holland

With roller coasters such as Lost Gravity and Goliath, as well as spectacular shows and stunning gardens, the whole family is guaranteed to have a fantastic day out at Walibi Holland in Biddinghuizen. The amusement park is situated about 30km from our campsite.

Dolfinarium Harderwijk

About 25km from ‘t Oppertje, you will find Europe’s biggest marine mammal park Dolfinarium. Come face to face with sea lions, marvel at the dolphins’ antics or visit one of the park’s spectacular shows.  Kids will have a splashing good time on the many slides at the new ‘Waterpret’ water playground, which is surrounded by a sunbathing area with sun loungers. So don’t forget your swimming gear!

And after all the hustle and bustle of the city, the peace and quiet at ‘t Oppertje is pure bliss.

Zuiderzeemuseum Enkhuizen

Discover what life was like around the Zuider Zee before it became IJsselmeer in 1932 after the construction of the IJsselmeer dam. Step back in time at the Zuiderzeemuseum where the focus is on water and the old trades and communities around IJsselmeer and Markermeer. The outdoor museum is an actual village with over 140 historic buildings. Inside the museum, you will find the Zuider Zee treasury as well as regularly changing contemporary exhibitions. Enkhuizen is about 35km from Camping ‘t Oppertje.
